Report: New York Giants expect Darren Waller to retire from NFL

The New York Giants expect tight end Darren Waller to retire from the NFL, according to ESPN.

Waller will likely decide by next week’s mandatory minicamp, but people in and around the team anticipate he will enter retirement, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter Jordan Raanan.

“Would be a pleasant surprise if he decided otherwise,” Raanan posted Monday.

Waller played five seasons for the Raiders across Oakland and Las Vegas. He was named a Pro Bowler in 2020 when he had 1,196 yards receiving and nine touchdowns, both career highs.

He was traded to New York last offseason and appeared in 12 games for the Giants while battling injuries, bringing in 52 catches for 552 yards and one touchdown.

Over his career, Waller has struggled with injuries on the field and drug addiction off the field.

His charitable foundation, which is dedicated to helping youth overcome and avoid drug and alcohol addiction, has remained active in Southern Nevada following last year’s trade to New York.

Waller also made headlines last week when he released a music video that appeared to reference his recent divorce from Las Vegas Aces guard Kelsey Plum.
