REPORT: New York Jets Have Shocking Backup Plan For Aaron Rodgers That Will Stun NFL Fans – Gridiron Heroics
The New York Jets bet all their chips on Aaron Rodgers last season — and after just three snaps to the start of the season — they lost their savior and the Super Bowl expectations were suddenly gone.
The Jets attempted to see if Zach Wilson could live up to his first round draft selection, but the former BYU quarterback was shaky and inconsistent.
Despite having a top five defense in 2023, the Jets’ season ended when Rodgers went down.
The New York Jets never really recovered from that, and both Wilson and Tim Boyle tried to lead the team the rest of the way. Wilson, who was the former No. 2 overall pick, went 4-7 as a starter. He threw for 2,271 yards and had eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. He has one year left on his initial four-year deal, but the Jets are widely expected to trade or cut him.
Team owner Woody Johnson didn’t hold back his frustrations with the team’s lack of having a backup plan when he spoke publicly about the offensive woes at the NFL Honors earlier this month.
“The discussions I’ve had in the last couple of months, they’ve seen me about as mad as I can be with what was going on, with the offense particularly,” Johnson reportedly said, via ESPN.
“We have all this talent, and we have to deploy talent properly. So I think they all got the message. This is it. This is the time to go. We’ve got to produce this year.”
According to the report, when asked specifically by reporters about the team’s need for a backup, Johnson agreed.
“You need a backup quarterback,” he said. “We didn’t have one last year.”
Wilson, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has faced mounting criticism throughout his NFL career. After another disastrous season, the Jets moved forward last year to acquire four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers in an offseason trade with the Green Bay Packers.
With that, the New York Jets moved from trying to make the playoffs for the first time since 2010 to talking about Super Bowl aspirations. But just four plays into Rodgers’ debut, he suffered a season-ending leg injury, and the Jets were back at square one.
Now with Rodgers seemingly fully healthy for 2024, the Jets are once again entering the season with Super Bowl aspirations. They added premier talent along the offensive line and signed veteran WR Mike WIlliams to compliment Garrett Wilson. If Rodgers were to get injured again, the Jets have veteran backup Tyrod Taylor who has proven he can win games when called upon.
But a recent report may shock many NFL fans. Apparently the Jets brass is already looking ahead to 2025 and preparing for life without Rodgers,
New York Jets Could Target Dak Prescott If Aaron Rodgers Retires After This Season
Father Time is undefeated, especially after NFL fans witnessed the retirement of the greatest quarterback in the game, Tom Brady, just before 2023. This means it could happen to the Jets quarterback. Rodgers’s age of 40 also creates a more considerable risk for injuries and rehab.
It seems as though the New York Jets have already taken this into account after last season’s disappointing record, during which the four-time NFL MVP was lost to injury for the entire season, and Dallas Cowboys fans won’t be happy with the idea.
According to Lou Scataglia of NFL Spin Zone, the Jets, if they decide to move on from the controversial Rodgers in 2025 Free Agency, should target Dallas Cowboys starter Dak Prescott, who has notably been involved in trade talks due to the significant contract extension he is due before 2025.
For the team to cut Rodgers straight up in 2025, they would have to take on a whopping $49 million in dead cap money, which would hamper the team in 2025 and most likely remove Prescott from the equation.
So this scenario would only make sense if the New York Jets QB decided to retire, which absolutely seems plausible given his interests off the field.
