Saturday’s Belmont Stakes handle reaches more than 5M, NYRA says

It was a historic day Saturday for the Saratoga Race Course and the Capital Region as the Belmont Stakes was held in Saratoga Springs for the first time.

Officials with the New York Racing Association have now announced how much money was gambled on the event.

The handle Saturday totaled more than $125 million, which is a NYRA record for a year without a Triple Crown winner. The old record was about $118 million. Nearly $61 million was wagered on the Belmont Stakes alone.

A sellout crowd of 50,000 was on hand to see Dornoch’s long-shot win.

Rhe racing continued on Sunday. Ten races were on the card for a special New York showcase featuring horses bred in the state.

The Velmont will be back in Saratoga next year, and opening day for the regular 2024 Saratoga season is set for July 11.
