SCSU Women’s Basketball Defeats Dominican, 60-50 – Southern Connecticut State University Athletics

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University women’s basketball picked up a non-conference win with a 60-50 victory against Dominican at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 9-2 overall while Dominican dropped to 9-4 overall.

Rheyna Steinauer had her second double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive end. Katie Williamson finished with 13 points and nine rebounds while Hope Fox flirted with a triple-double with nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Despite an off-night shooting, Delaney Haines had seven assists and two steals in the Owls’ win. Also of note, Jillian Martin was 2-for-2 from the free throw to improve to 36-for-37 for the season to give the senior guard a NCAA Division II leading 97.3% free throw percentage. 

Southern opened the game with a 10-0 run over the first two minutes of the game, keyed by six points from Steinauer. Dominican responded with a 13-4 run to pull within a point with 3:14 to go in the first quarter. The Owls closed the half with a 6-2 run, keyed by a three-pointer from Haines, to take a 20-15 lead at the first break.

Dominican tied the game at 22-22 with 7:41 to go in the first quarter and took a 25-22 lead on a three-pointer just moments later. Overall, the Chargers outscored Southern Connecticut, 15-7, in the second quarter to take a 30-27 lead at halftime. Dominican also stretched it’s lead to 35-27 for its largest lead of the game with 8:53 to go in the third quarter.

Steinhauer and Williamson combined for eight points on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 35-35 with 6:19 remaining in the third. Dominican reclaimed the lead on its next possession before the Owls took the lead for good, 41-40, with 1:28 to go in the third quarter. Trailing 40-37, Ally Sentance scored six-straight points to give the Owls a 43-40 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Owls pushed its lead to 48-40 to cap an 11-0 run, with Sentance totaling eight points less than two minutes into the final frame. The Owls managed to hold off the Chargers to close the game with the 10-point win.

Southern is back in action on Sunday, Dec. 22 when it hosts Molloy for its final non-conference game of the year at 1:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
