Seattle Seahawks fall hard in NFL Week 6 power rankings after shocking home loss to New York Giants | Sporting News
Maybe these Seattle Seahawks are not quite who we thought they were after their 3-0 start to the season. Maybe they were looking past the New York Giants towards Thursday night’s huge game against the San Francisco 49ers. Maybe they were still flustered from their humbling loss last Monday night to the Detroit Lions.
Whatever the case, the Seahawks didn’t look like themselves in yesterday’s shocking 29-20 loss at home to the Giants. As head coach Mike Macdonald said after the game, they got out-executed in all three phases of the game – especially on special teams, where they look like one of the worst teams in the NFL.
As expected, Seattle has taken a tumble in the latest power rankings from Vinnie Iyer at The Sporting News. Heading into Week 6, they’re down six spots, from ninth to 15th.
Seahawks tumble in power rankings
“The Seahawks have cooled off the past week, struggling badly against the run in losses to the Lions and Giants. That puts a little too much literal pressure on Geno Smith and the passing game, leading to offensive limitations.”
The offense finally got things going in the fourth quarter and Smith led yet another impressive scoring drive. He also gave them a chance to tie the game and force overtime. However, more poor execution on special teams resulted in a blocked field goal that got returned for a touchdown, ending the game on a particularly sour note for the Seahawks.
Injuries have no doubt played a role in Seattle’s struggles over the last week, especially to their defensive line. Boye Mafe sat out again along with Byron Murphy II on Sunday, and Uchenna Nwosu got injured again.
However, the team’s greatest problem remains the offensive line, which has managed to go from bad to worse. If they don’t make some serious changes to that unit it’s difficult to see this team making a deep run in the playoffs, where weaknesses invariably get exposed.
