See it: Giants, Lions engage in massive fights during joint practice

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs (26) runs against New York Giants during the first half of a preseason game at Ford Field in Detroit on Friday, Aug. 11, 2023.

The New York Giants and Detroit Lions saw tempers flare during their joint practices a year ago but managed to avoid any punches being thrown.

The same could be said for their first joint practice on Monday morning.

Less than an hour into the session, the Giants’ defense and Lions’ offense engaged in a massive brawl that spilled over to the Giants’ side of the field in full view of the fans.

The brawl began after safety Dane Belton punched the ball out of the hands of Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who took exception to it and shoved Belton. Giants linebacker Isaiah Simmons then immediately got into St. Brown’s face as the two teams spilled on the field.

Rookie Dru Phillips was also involved in what set the whole fight into motion.

Giants cornerback Mario Goodrich could be seen throwing punches at what appeared to be multiple Lions players as separate scrums also broke out, including one involving cornerback Nick McCloud. He, too, was seen throwing punches at Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell.

Away from the major scrum, Giants safety Tre Hawkins violently threw a Lions player to the ground.

Breon Borders also appeared to get a punch in for the Giants’ defense.

After the two teams were broken up and went back to their respective sidelines, Giants linebacker Brian Burns signaled to the crowd in a celebratory manner which drew a large ovation.

Roughly 10 minutes later, a second fight nearly broke out when Lions cornerback Morice Norris hit Giants running back Eric Gray so hard his helmet popped off.

Although the two teams avoided another melee at that point, it wouldn’t take long before they were back at it.

A second fight broke out after a Lions defender knocked the ball out of quarterback Daniel Jones’ hands, which sent head coach Brian Daboll into a tizzy.
