John Fetterman, Democrat Senator of Pennsylvania, criticized New York magazine for describing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson‘s murder as ‘inevitable.’ His remarks came in response to an article published by the New York magazine titled, “The Shooting That Was Inevitable.”
“The public execution of an innocent man and father of two is indefensible, not ‘inevitable.’ Condoning and cheering this on says more about YOU than the situation of health insurance,” the senator wrote on his X account.
Public Reaction to Thompson’s Death
Following Thompson’s murder, UnitedHealthcare’s social media pages were bombarded with comments from people claiming their medical claims had been rejected. This led the company to disable comments on its platforms. Additionally, many publicly applauded the killing, portraying the murderer as a vigilante.
The murder placed the healthcare insurance industry under intense scrutiny, amid rumors that the shooter harbored a grudge against the company.
Details Surrounding Thompson’s Murder
Brian Thompson was assassinated in Manhattan, New York, on December 4. Although the motive remains unknown, bullet casings found at the crime scene bore the words “deny, depose, defend.”
The New York Police Department (NYPD) is actively searching for the suspect. NYC Mayor Eric Adams recently announced that police now have a name and that the “net is closing in” on the offender.
Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, a physical therapist, revealed that her husband had received threats in the past, which he may have disregarded.
