South Park (N.Y.) RB Adam Nunes set state single-game rushing record

A new mark stands in the record books of New York high school football history as of Thursday night.

Buffalo South Park running back Adam Nunes rushed for 593 yards to break the New York State single-game mark in the team’s 55-28 win against Iroquois at All-High Stadium. Nunes also totaled seven touchdowns, tying him for the fourth-most in state history, and second in Western New York’s record-book.

He opened with an 80-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the game, then added touchdown runs of 65, 36, 61, 81, 93, and 41 yards to help him break the mark set by Joe Benedict for Sandy Creek in 2016.

After the outburst, Nunes has 864 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns — averaging better than 22 yards per carry — to go along with 20 tackles and three interceptions defensively.

As a junior, Nunes nearly had 1,000 all-purpose yards with eight touchdowns. On defense he had 75 tackles and an interception.

He is well on his way to surpassing those numbers through three weeks, where he’d helped the Sparks start 3-0 this season.
