Sports legends and Saturday Night Live host invest in TGL New York franchise
RORY MCILROY and Tiger Woods’ TGL golf league has some new investors to one of its franchise teams.
New York Golf Club team consists of Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young.
And the NYC franchise side revealed some good news ahead of the first matches in 2025.
The new high-tech golf league has been given the green light to start in Florida, January 7 at the SoFi Centre in Florida.
The team has introduced a group of iconic New York sports figures—Derek Jeter, Eli Manning, Michael Strahan, and CC Sabathia as investors in Steve Cohen’s New York Golf Club.
Additionally, native New Yorker and SNL host Jimmy Fallon and long-time resident and tennis icon John McEnroe have joined the club’s investor group as limited partners.
A statement given to CNBC on Monday revealed: “New York has the greatest fans in the world, and we have built a team that will make New Yorkers proud.
“We believe this fresh, innovative take on the sport will appeal to traditional and new golf fans alike.”
Terms of the deals were not disclosed, but NFL legend Manning and baseball legend Jeter also commented on the news.
The statement added: “There [have] been a lot of exciting trends in golf with participation growing on and off the course.
“I’m looking forward to seeing NYGC added to New York’s sports legacy,”
Cameron Young grew up in Sleepy Hollow and attended Fordham Prep in the Bronx, is the only player with New York ties.
Teams have also been named and confirmed for the league, along with fixtures for the regular season.
A purpose-built facility is a 250,000-square-foot venue that is to accommodate approximately 1,600 people on match nights.
All six teams comprising 24 mic’d up stars of the PGA Tour will compete across a 15-match regular season at the 1,500-capacity arena in Palm Beach Gardens.
That’s before the post-season begins, culminating in a best-of-three Finals Series showdown for the SoFi Cup on March 24.
It will air on ESPN in the USA with a broadcast deal yet to be confirmed for UK and Ireland.
