The two teams are the first from Group D to kick-start their T20 World Cup campaigns. Additionally, the fourth match of the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup will also be the first ever international match at the newly-inaugurated Nassau County International Stadium in New York, where India and Bangladesh had played a warm-up match on Saturday.

Both teams have gone through a change in leadership since the last T20 World Cup. While Aiden Markram has taken over South African T20I leadership from Temba Bavuma, who remains Test and ODI captain, Sri Lanka decided to name Wanindu Hasaranga as the captain of T20I side after picking Dasun Shanaka for the role in 2022.

Both Sri Lanka and South Africa had failed to reach the semi-finals of the last T20 World Cup. The Proteas had narrowly lost out the second spot in their group to Pakistan following a shock loss against Netherlands while Sri Lanka finished fourth in their group in the Super 12s after topping their group in the first round.

By finishing among the top four in their respective groups in the Super 12s, both South Africa and Sri Lanka ensured automatic qualification for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

The Proteas lead the Lankans 12-5 in 17 T20I meetings, the first of which took place in Hambantota in the 2012 World T20. One of South Africa’s 12 wins came in a Super Over. South Africa are also in the lead when it comes to T20 World Cup head-to-head record, leading Sri Lanka three wins to one.
