Steelers predicted to land Russell Wilson replacement in 2025 NFL Draft | Sporting News

The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the 2024 campaign with a major question mark at the quarterback position after bringing in both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields during the offseason.

Luckily for Pittsburgh, that is no longer the case, as Wilson has provided a massive upgrade under center and solidified himself as the unquestioned starter for the remainder of the 2024 campaign.

But things are murky after this season. While Wilson is fully expected to return to Pittsburgh as long as nothing disastrous happens, it isn’t guaranteed because he’ll be a free agent next year and could demand the kind of deal the Steelers may be hesitant to give him. And, if the event that Wilson and Fields both walk in 2024, Pittsburgh will be back to the drawing board.

With that in mind, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Ayrton Ostly has the Steelers taking Alabama signal-caller Jalen Milroe with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

“Pittsburgh has the inside track to win the AFC North for the first time since 2020 with a pair of quarterbacks who are not signed for the 2025 season,” Ostly wrote.
“The Steelers take a gamble a first-round quarterback for the second time in three years but Milroe is a stark contrast to Kenny Pickett. He’s drawn comparisons to Jalen Hurts for his strong frame at 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds. He is an outstanding athlete with a big arm and the mental makeup to make it in the NFL. His floor as a runner should serve him well if he’s forced into a starting role as a rookie.”

Even if Wilson returns in 2025, it wouldn’t be outlandish for the Steelers to take a quarterback. After all, he’ll be 37 next year and there’s no telling how much longer he’s going to play. Having Milroe waiting in the wings gives the Steelers the long-term option Wilson doesn’t figure to be.

All that said, it remains to be seen if Milroe will even last this long into the first round. He’s one of the top signal-callers in next year’s class and there will be a bunch of teams ahead of the Steelers that need a quarterback.

But if Milroe is there when the Steelers are on the clock, they’ll be hard-pressed to pass up on such a talented young quarterback who could be the future in Pittsburgh.
