Stewart’s Shops’ newest store, which opened Dec. 4 in Marcellus, New York, sits where a supermarket operated for more than 40 years—and consequently is about 500 square feet bigger to accommodate groceries.

The new 4,500-square-foot convenience store, at 27 E. Main St., is the fifth Stewart’s Shops in Onondaga County. It will hold a grand opening on Dec. 14.

Stewart’s Shops demolished the building and built a new convenience store with extra room, Robin Cooper, public relations manager at Stewart’s Shops, told CSP in July. A regular Stewart’s Shops store is about 4,000 square feet.

“Marcellus is such a vibrant, close-knit village and we are honored to build on the legacy that Rich Nojaim and his family created by supporting the community through the operation of Nojaim Brothers supermarket at this location,” said Chad Kiesow, chief operating officer of Stewart’s Shops.

The c-store, in a suburb of Syracuse, is a $4 million investment in the community, the company said, and includes a wide range of sandwiches, soups, pizza, beverages and fresh, award-winning milk and ice cream to the community.

“Our new Marcellus shop, which is larger than our typical Stewart’s, allows us to serve as your restaurant, your interim grocery store and your gas station,” the company said.

  • Stewart’s Shops is No. 23 on CSP’s 2024 Top 202 ranking of U.S. convenience-store chains by store count.

In conjunction with the grand opening, Stewart’s Shops will be offering specials on hot dogs, pizza, subs, iced coffee and all grades of fuel, including premium non-ethanol and diesel.

Plans by Stewart’s Shops to fill the void of the shuttered supermarket, which closed in the spring after more than four decades in business, were delayed after the village in February imposed a six-month moratorium on new developments.

Stewart’s Shops subsequently applied for and received an exemption to the moratorium, Cooper said. The village’s zoning board of appeals, planning board and village board all approved the new development July 22.

Nojaim Brothers and Stewart’s Shops closed on the $1.7 million sale July 16, Cooper said.

This isn’t the first time Stewart’s Shops has added a grocery section in an area losing a supermarket. Cooper said Stewart’s Shops started doing this about five years ago.

Founded in 1945, Ballston Spa, New York-based Stewart’s Shops is an employee- and family-owned convenience-store chain known for its milk, ice cream, coffee, Easy Food meals and other convenience items. There are 360 Stewart’s Shops in upstate New York and southern Vermont.
