Super Bowl champ and three 2020 draft picks audition for Jets RB role per report | Sporting News
The New York Jets running backs room currently includes five members, but the team could potentially add another onto the 90-man roster in the coming days.
The Jets reportedly hosted four running backs, all of whom have NFL game experience, for workouts on Friday. New York Daily News writer Antwan Staley reported that Gang Green invited Eno Benjamin, Anthony McFarland, Deon Jackson and Ke’Shawn Vaughn to the team facility.
On Thursday, New York placed running back Tarik Cohen on the Reserve/Retired list after he announced an end to his comeback bid. That move leaves four men — fourth-round rookie Braelon Allen, fifth-round rookie Isaiah Davis, 2023 fifth-rounder Israel Abanikanda and former Practice Squad player Xazavian Valladay — battling for a spot on the depth chart behind RB1 Breece Hall.
Vaughn owns the highest number of regular season reps amongst the four tryout players. The 2020 third-round selection appeared in 43 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over the course of his rookie contract. While the majority of Vaughn’s action came on special teams, he has 103 career carries. He rushed five times during Tampa Bay’s NFC Wildcard win over Washington as a rookie, but did not appear during the remainder of the team’s Super Bowl run.
Like Vaughn, McFarland (Round 4) and Benjamin (Round 7) were part of the 2020 NFL Draft class. The former suited up only six times for the Pittsburgh Steelers over the last three seasons. Meanwhile, Benjamin was a gameday inactive for his entire rookie season with the Arizona Cardinals before making his debut in 2021. He spent the 2023 on Injured Reserve after rupturing his Achilles with the New Orleans Saints.
Jackson, who went undrafted in 2021, totaled 27 appearances for the Indianapolis Colts before brief stints with the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants, who waived him this past May with an injury settlement. He led all Colts running backs in receiving with 30 catches for 209 yards in 2022.
