T20 World Cup 2024: New York beefs up security ahead of India vs Pakistan tie

Security is being beefed up to ensure public safety in response to reports of a threat to the high-voltage India versus Pakitan clash in the T20 World Cup 2024 in New York. However, according to a statement released by the governor’s office, “there is no credible public safety threat at this time.”

The much-anticipated India versus Pakistan showdown will occur at the Eisenhower Park Stadium on June 9. This venue is situated about 25 miles east of Manhattan and will host eight matches from June 3 to June 12. Kathy Hochul, the governor of the state of New York, said that her administration has been in touch with law enforcement authorities for several months to ensure that the matches are organized without any hindrance.

“I have also directed the New York State Police to engage in elevated security measures, including an increased law enforcement presence, advanced surveillance, and thorough screening processes. Public safety is my top priority and we are committed to ensuring the Cricket World Cup is a safe, enjoyable experience,” she said.

According to ESPNcricinfo, the authorities are yet to find any conclusive evidence in support of the reported threat. Still, the ICC said the security would be “robust” throughout the marquee event, including at the New York venue.

“The safety and security of everyone at the event is our number one priority and we have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place. We work closely with authorities in our host countries and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event,” an ICC spokesperson said.

Earlier this month, the ICC and Cricket West Indies, who are the co-hosts of the impending World Cup along with USA, reassured that they are taking every measure possible to ensure the safety of the players and the supporters

The Men in Blue play four games in New York – their first one against Canada (June 5), then the highly-anticipated clash with Pakistan, followed by a meeting with USA on June 12. They are also set to play a warm-up game against Bangladesh there on June 1. The iconic Virat Kohli is yet to join the Indian squad after being allowed a short break but the others have assembled in the US and started training for the 20-team competition.
