Tom Thibodeau, or ‘Thibs’ as he’s affectionately known, has carved out a remarkable career in the NBA that’s as intriguing as it is impressive. After his time with Harvard, he entered the NBA. In 1989, Thibodeau began his NBA journey with the Minnesota Timberwolves as an assistant coach. His journey continued as he joined the San Antonio Spurs in 1992 under Jerry Tarkanian, Rex Hughes, and John Lucas for two seasons. He later joined the Philadelphia 76ers in 1994 for two seasons again.

In 1996, he joined the New York Knicks as an assistant to Jeff Van Gundy. He helped his team to set the highest NBA record then, 33 consecutive opponents under 100 points in the 2000–01 season. He was also part of the Eastern Conference All-Star team coaching staff during the 2000 All-Star Game. After seven successful years with the Knicks, Thibodeau moved to the Houston Rockets in 2003, continuing under head coach Jeff Van Gundy until 2007. Van Gundy later called Thibs “brilliant” and “passionate”.

His big break came when he was hired as the associate head coach for the Boston Celtics in 2007. At Boston, he played a crucial role in leading the Celtics to the NBA Championship in 2008 and back to the Finals in 2010. Although the Knicks didn’t make his extension details official, NBA insider Marc Stein says, ” There was a strong expectation [at Summer League] that a contract extension for Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau will be announced in the near future…Has been regarded for weeks as a lock to receive a new deal that pays at least $10 million annually.“

It’s the most important thing in their lives.’”

Rose, who became the youngest MVP in league history played under Thibodeau. Similar Jimmy Butler said when he was fired by the Timberwolves, “Thibs is a big part – and you can tell I’m smiling because it’s the truth — of who I am today as a player.
