A tornado-like situation prompted an alert for severe weather in the city of Binghamton on Sunday. This comes as the National Weather Service (NWS) alerted the residents of New York through multiple warnings of possible twisters approaching the Broome and Oneida Counties. A video from the region shows a massive cloud sweeping the skies with a “tornado ready to strike,” as per a resident who shared it on social media.

“Tornado ready to strike Binghamton,” a resident wrote while sharing the footage on X (formerly called Twitter). Meanwhile, some images reportedly taken from outside of The Guthrie Clinic (Lourdes Hospital) on Riverside Drive showed the twister passing from the area.

“This is facing North East towards Riverside Drive … Luckily it didn’t touch down in town but it clearly passed directly over, ready to touch down whenever the weather was just right,” another person claiming to be a resident of Binghamton remarked on social media.

The NWS office in Binghamton earlier issued a tornado Warning for South Central Oneida, Northwestern Otsego, and Eastern Madison Counties in central New York.

The weather agency issued a detailed weather statement, in which it mentioned a thunderstorm. The storm was located over Bridgewater at around 4:11 pm (EDT). “A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over … 13 miles east of Hamilton,” it said. The twister was moving in the east at 55 mph.

“Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely,” the NWS statement added.

The dangerous storm is expected to reach West Winfield, Bridgewater, and Unadilla Forks at around 4:15 pm (EDT), predicted the experts.
