TV star’s huge claim over vacant Jets job as NFL bloodbath begins; Cowboys move fuels axe fears

The worst day for coaches on the hot seat is here: NFL black Monday.

Watch every game of the NFL Postseason, including the Super Bowl, live with ESPN on Kayo Sports. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer.

There were already several in-season head coach firings. The Chicago Bears already fired Matt Eberflus on Nov. 29, the Jets parted ways with Robert Saleh on Oct. 8, and the Saints canned Dennis Allen on Nov. 4. The Patriots also wasted no time in firing Jerod Mayo shortly after their 23-16 win against Buffalo on Sunday (Monday AEDT)

Who’s on the hot seat today? Rumblings suggest Las Vegas’ Antonio Pierce and Dallas’ Mike McCarthy could be facing unemployment.

FIRST VICTIM AS BASKETCASE MAKES MOVE

Black Monday has claimed its first — and perhaps most predictable — victim.

The Jaguars fired head coach Doug Pederson on Monday morning, the day after a dismal 4-13 season ended, according to multiple reports.

Owner Shad Khan revealed in a statement that GM Trent Baalke will remain with the team and be a part of the process to hire Pederson’s replacement.

“As much as Doug and I both wish his experience here in Jacksonville would have ended better, I have an obligation first and foremost to serve the best interest of our team and especially our fans, who faithfully support our team and are overdue to be rewarded,” Khan said.

Pederson took over the dumpster fire left by Urban Meyer’s one monumentally awful season.

He led the Jaguars to an AFC South title and thrilling wild-card win over the Chargers in his first season in 2022 before the team took drastic steps backwards in his two following seasons.

Jacksonville started 8-3 last season before losing five of their final six games, falling to the Titans on the season’s final day to hand the AFC South title to the Texans.

The bad vibes carried over to 2024 with an 0-4 start that the team was unable to recover from.

“The time to summon new leadership is now,” Khan said. “I strongly believe it is possible next season to restore the winning environment we had here not long ago. I will collaborate with general manager Trent Baalke and others, within and close to our organization, to hire a leader who shares my ambition and is really to seize the extraordinary opportunity we will offer in Jacksonville.”

Pederson failed to develop former No. 1 pick Trevor Lawrence into the franchise-altering quarterback many hoped he would become.

Lawrence, who signed a five-year, $275 million extension in June, had thrown 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions this season before suffering a season-ending concussion on Dec. 1.

The Jets, Bears and Saints all fired their coaches during the season, while the Patriots axed Jerod Mayo on Sunday night after one season.

Pederson, who led the Eagles to a Super Bowl in 2018, finishes his Jacksonville tenure 22-29.

INSIDE WHO THE JETS’ WILL TARGET FOR NEXT HEAD COACH

The Jets are leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of the franchise’s next head coach.

The organization has put in requests to interview a slew of coordinators preparing their current teams for the playoffs, including Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, per reports.

Requests to interview Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, both of whom have prior head coaching experience with Denver and Chicago, have also been submitted.A request to speak with Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, formerly coach of the Dolphins, has been submitted, as well as one for 49ers quarterbacks coach Brian Griese.

The Jets have also requested to speak with Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik and Vikings quarterback coach Josh McCown.

Other prospective candidates will likely be announced as the aftermath of the 2024 regular season continues.

The Jets have already begun the interview process after firing coach Robert Saleh in October following a 2-3 start.

Former Panthers and Commanders coach Ron Rivera spoke with Jets brass about the role last week, while ex-Titans coach Mike Vrabel — one of the hottest candidates on the coaching market — interviewed this past Friday.

The Jets, who will also meet with former coach Rex Ryan about the job he held from 2009-14, are not anticipated “to put in a formal request” for Detroit’s offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, according to The Athletic.

Ryan, who is currently an analyst on ESPN, was asked on a New York radio show if he thinks he’ll be the next Jets coach.

“Oh 100% I do. And the reason I think I’ll get it is that I’m the best guy (for the job) and it’s not even close,” Ryan said.

GIANTS MAKE SHOCK CALL ON COACH AFTER DISASTROUS SEASON

The top guys are coming back for the New York Giants

Ginats president John Mara insisted he wanted to, if at all possible, show more patience this time around, acknowledging that he perhaps bailed on head coaches too quickly as the demise of the Giants franchise reached appalling levels.

There is no doubt that the 2024 season severely tested the patience of the co-owner but in the end, there will be status quo, with general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll returning for a fourth year.

“Now that the season is over, we felt it necessary to make this statement,” Mara said in a statement Monday morning. “Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll will continue in their respective roles with the organization. As disappointing as the results of the season have been, Steve (Tisch) and I remain confident in the process that Joe and Brian have implemented and their vision for our team.

“We look forward to the future and achieving the results we all desire.”

Fans who wanted sweeping change as a result of the Giants going 3-14 in the 100th season in franchise history will be disappointed by this.

Mara and co-owner Steve Tisch decided to stay the course with the duo that in 2022 was hired away from the Buffalo Bills and enjoyed immediate success, followed by regression in 2023 and complete failure this past season.

In three years, the Giants are 18-32-1 in the regular season and 1-1 in the playoffs with rosters Schoen assembled and Daboll guided. The progression has been inverted, from 9-7-1 and the first playoff victory in 11 years to 6-11 in 2023 to this year’s bottoming out.

Clearly, Giants ownership still believes in Schoen’s vision and Daboll’s ability to get the best out of the players he is provided. Both were signed to five-year contracts and thus have two years remaining on their original deals.

The Giants own the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and this vote of confidence means ownership is confident that Schoen can select the right player and Daboll can help that player reach his potential. There is a solid chance that player will be a quarterback, raising the stakes even higher for the Giants to get this one right.

JETS REVEAL HOW RODGERS FUTURE WILL BE DECIDED

The Jets’ future plans at quarterback will be left to the next general manager and head coach.

Owner Woody Johnson told The Post’s Brian Costello that the decision on Aaron Rodgers will be left to the two men that he taps to lead the franchise going forward, whoever they may be.

“From a numbers standpoint, [Rodgers] did OK, except for the most important number – winning games,” Johnson told Costello in an exclusive interview.

“But that’s going to be up to the coach. The coach will have to decide what the quarterback situation is. That’s going to be a very important job for the general manager and the coach – what do we want and when do we get it and what’s our timeline. Where does Aaron Rodgers fit into that?”

The Jets are currently in the middle of a search to fill both positions, with the organization announcing the completion of several interviews, and the plan for Rodgers would surely be a question that is at the forefront of those conversations.Rodgers was brought in two seasons ago to change the direction of the franchise, but inconsistent play and injuries have marred his time with the Jets.

Those two poor seasons ultimately led to the firings of head coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas.

Brady: One of the best things I’ve seen | 01:24

The future Hall-of-Fame quarterback suffered a season-ending Achilles tear during the first drive of the Jets season in 2023 and despite hopes for the organization to be a championship contender in 2024, the Jets fell well short of that.

Questions about Rodgers’ future with the team have become more persistent as the season has progressed and the quarterback has acknowledged that Sunday could be his last game with the Jets.

And following the season-ending win over the Dolphins on Sunday, Rodgers said “I honestly don’t know” when asked if he thinks he’ll be back with the Jets next season.

“Feels good to be able to do some of those things the last five or six weeks I know I was capable of doing, even at 40, 41,” Rodgers said.

“Either way, I won’t be upset or offended whatever they decide to do. If they want to move on, if I still want to play and if not I’ll let them know at some point if that’s the case.”

COWBOYS COACH’S SURPRISE MOVE FUELS SPECULATION

It was an emotional season finale for Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy.

Moments after Dallas concluded its regular season with a 23-19 loss to Washington at home, the team’s fifth-year coach shared a few heartfelt moments with staffers in the team’s locker room as speculation builds as to whether owner Jerry Jones will retain him.

The scene of McCarthy, 61, embracing his assistants upon entering the locker room caught those who cover the team by surprise, with the Dallas Morning News reporting, “Haven’t seen that before.”

Hired by the Cowboys in 2020, McCarthy coached the team to three playoff appearances in the past five seasons.

Dallas fell far short of expectations this year as losses and injuries piled up, with rumors swirling about McCarthy’s future with the franchise on a near-weekly basis. With the book now closed on a challenging 2024 season, McCarthy is focused on what’s ahead and what he hopes is a return to Dallas.

There are currently five coaching vacancies following Sunday’s conclusion of the 2024 regular season. The Patriots fired first-year coach Jerod Mayo shortly after Sunday’s 23-16 win over the Bills.

The Jaguars let go of Doug Pederson on Monday morning after three seasons. The Bears, Saints and Jets all fired their coaches midseason.

BENGALS FALL GUY REVEALED

The Bengals, who narrowly missed the playoffs, have parted ways with DC Lou Anarumo according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Cincinnati’s defense gave up the fourth-most passing TD’s (30) this season and likely put the bulk of their season failure on Anarumo.
