US Open fashion: 5 iconic New York looks – ft. Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova
New York is one of the fashion capitals of the world – and not just on the catwalk.
With the US Open getting underway, we go back and look at the five of the most memorable outfits worn at the tournament in recent years.
Serena Williams – 2004
Williams was no stranger to making a big fashion statement, with the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion wearing some of the most famous outfits in tennis history.
And, while there are a few US Open outfits we could have chosen for the American, perhaps none are as well-remembered as her kit for the 2004 tournament.
The six-time US Open winner wore a black Nike tank top coupled with a denim-look skirt, and wore cowgirl-inspired boots during the warm-up – alongside walking onto court in a leather jacket.
Two decades on, it remains one of her most iconic outfits.

Maria Sharapova – 2006
2006 was a special US Open for Sharapova, with the then-19-year-old lifting her first and only title in New York.
It also happened to be the year that the five-time major champion wore one of her most memorable on-court outfits, with her Nike ‘little black dress’ inspired ensemble proving a huge hit at the time.
Sharapova was also no stranger to other memorable looks in New York, wearing a Swarovski-embedded dress during her return to the tournament in 2017.

Fabio Fognini – 2018
One of the biggest – and at times, most controversial – players in recent history, Fognini has been a stalwart on the ATP Tour for the best part of two decades.
The Italian has certainly delivered some memorable looks over the years – even recently with his bleach-blonde hair – but perhaps none are more striking than his 2018 US Open outfit.
Paying tribute to the nation the tournament is held in, the Italian wore a stars-and-stripes inspired kit, with red and white striped shorts and a dark blue shirt.
Fognini’s former doubles partner Simone Bolelli also wore the same outfit during his campaign.

Andre Agassi – 1990
Tennis has produced few bigger stars than Agassi, who remains one of the most iconic and influential tennis players in history almost two decades on from his retirement.
The eight-time Slam winner was a tennis fashion icon during his playing days and wore countless memorable outfits, particularly during the early years of his career.
Agassi wore plenty of incredible kits but perhaps his best was his outfit from 1990, the year he reached the US Open final for the first time.
His luminous yellow-sleeved look has stayed in the public consciousness for 34 years.

Carlos Alcaraz – 2023
We go from the biggest star of the 1990s to arguably the biggest star now, with Alcaraz someone who is building a formidable reputation on and off the court.
Alcaraz has made no secret of his admiration for Rafael Nadal, so it comes as no surprise that he has paid tribute to his compatriot – with the iconic ‘sleeveless’ look.
However, while Nadal usually played it safe design-wise, Alcaraz last year went for a bright pattern on his kit.
