US Open: Fritz Advances to First Major Final – Tennis Panorama
(September 6, 2024) FLUSHING, NY – In an all-American battle for the US Open final, No. 12 seed Taylor Fritz won the war with a 4-6, 7-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over 20th seed Frances Tiafoe to reach his first major final. The last time an American man made the US Open final was in 2006 when Andy Roddick reached the final and lost to Roger Federer. Fritz will face No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the final. Sinner beat Jack Draper in straight sets.
In the first set, Fritz ran out to a 3-0 lead, Then Tiafoe won the next five straight games, he went on to win the set 6-4. In the seond set, the games were tight going into the 12th game where Fritz broke Tiafoe’s serve to claim the set 7-5. In the third set, Tiafoe broke serve early for a 2-0 lead and heald on to that break to take the set 6-4.
In the fourth set Tiafoe was serving at 4-5 up 40-15 when he hit two double faults and hit an unforced error to give Fritz life in the game. Fritz took advantage and breaks to level the match at two sets all. Fritz went up 4-0 in the fifth and closed out the match 6-1 in three hours and 18 minutes.
“It’s the reason why I do what I do, Fritz said in his on court interview. “It’s the reason why I work so hard. I’m in the finals of the US Open. It’s a dream come true. I’m going to give it everything I have.”
