US Open: Paul in third round as Purcell quits

American Tommy Paul, the No 14 seed, moved into the third round of the US Open with his opponent Max Purcell from Australia retiring after two sets and a game on Thursday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. Paul led 7-5, 6-0, 1-0 when Purcell decided to quit.

After a close fight in the opening set, Paul came out all guns blazing in the second as he dished out a bagel. He pressed Purcell further by breaking him in the first game of the third set before the Aussie felt it was enough and walked to the net to shake hands.

Paul’s next challenge in Flushing Meadows is Canadian qualifier Gabriel Diallo, who upset No 24 seed Arthur Fils 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. It will be the American’s first-ever meeting with Diallo on the tour.

Notably, Tommy Paul won against Italian Lorenzo Sonego (6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2) in the first round, whereas world No 143 Diallo downed Spain’s Jaume Munar (6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5) after coming through the qualifying rounds.
