Heading into Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, Gambling.com’s horse racing expert has his eye on a thoroughbred not regarded as a favorite — Dornoch.
Appearing on an episode of “The Edge,” Steve Bittenbender, a Gambling.com gaming analyst and writer, breaks down the race, noting that the field of 10 horses in the Belmont is impressive, including long-shot Dornoch, pictured.
Though there won’t be a Triple Crown winner this year, a two-peat is possible with Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan (5-1) and Preakness Stakes first-place finisher Seize the Grey (8-1) in Saturday’s race. The Belmont is the final leg of the Triple Crown.
Which Horse Will Win The Belmont Stakes?
‘A Sound Horse’
When looking at the field, Bittenbender said Dornoch, at 15-1 early in the week, could be a good value bet. The Danny Gargan-trained Dornoch beat this year’s Belmont favorite, Sierra Leone (9-5), in a race several months ago.
Dornoch was hampered in this year’s Kentucky Derby by an inside post position but is in better shape to open the Belmont in the number six post position, said Bittenbender, a Kentucky resident.
“I think he’s a sound horse,” Bittenbender said.
Bittenbender added he also likes another value option, 12-1 Antiquarian, a Todd Pletcher-trained three-year-old. Antiquarian could have the staying power to perform well in the 1 ¼ miles race on Saturday, Bittenbender said.
The annual race normally is held at Belmont Park on Long Island but is being run temporarily at Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York while construction is completed at the traditional race course just east of New York City. The distance for the race at Saratoga on Saturday will be 1 ¼ miles, shorter than the customary 1 ½ miles at Belmont Park.
