Buffalo, NY – Western New York is bracing for another day of heavy lake-effect snow Sunday, with dangerous travel conditions expected. Snow bands are forecast to bring accumulations of up to 20 inches in the hardest-hit areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday, impacting Erie County and areas south of Buffalo, including the I-90 corridor. Snowfall rates of up to 3 inches per hour are anticipated in localized bands, significantly reducing visibility and making travel hazardous. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise extreme caution if on the roads.
Sunday’s high will hover near 32°F, with the heaviest snow expected during the morning hours and tapering off by the evening. Winds will reach up to 22 mph, creating additional blowing and drifting snow. Travelers should prepare for delays on major roadways, including I-90 and Route 5.
Looking ahead, Monday offers a brief break from snow with partly sunny skies and a high near 36°F. However, snow showers will likely return Tuesday and intensify Wednesday, with an 80% chance of additional accumulations.
Officials recommend keeping emergency kits in vehicles and staying updated with the latest weather alerts. Visibility can change rapidly within snow bands, and drivers are reminded to leave extra space between vehicles and avoid sudden stops or turns.
Stay tuned for updates and prepare for a challenging week ahead as lake-effect snow continues to affect the region.
