NEW YORK — Wednesday is Juneteenth, which means there will be closures around New York City.

What is the meaning of Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is observed to mark the day that the last enslaved people in the United States received notice of the Emancipation Proclamation. A United States Army officer and Union general issued the order in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865 — over two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation.

When did Juneteenth become a federal holiday?

President Joe Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth a federal holiday on June 17, 2021. The first Juneteenth recognized as a national holiday was observed the next day.

Will there be mail on Juneteenth?

There will not be any mail delivery in New York City on Juneteenth.

Gov. Kathy Hochul says because of the expected heat wave this week, admission to all New York State Parks will be free on Juneteenth, as well as on June 20.

Several beaches and pools will also be opening early, including the following:

Long Island

  • Robert Moses State Park
  • Hither Hills State Park
  • Sunken Meadow State Park

Hudson Valley

  • Lake Welch State Park
  • Canopus State Park 
  • Rockland Lake State Park
  • Tallman Mountain State Park
  • Bear Mountain State Park
  • Lake Tiorati Beach – Harriman State Park 

In New York City, the following parks will add cooling features through Friday:

  • Marsha P. Johnson State Park
  • Gantry Plaza State Park
  • Roberto Clemente State Park
  • Denny Farrell Riverbank State Park

The indoor pool at Danny Farrell Riverbank State Park will also be open.

Most major retail locations across the Tri-State Area will be open for their regular hours, along with museums, zoos and amusement parks.

According to the New York City Parks website, all parks recreation centers will be closed.
