What’s your sign? New York DMV now offers zodiac license plates (photos)

What’s your sign? Are you a creative Aquarius, a proud Leo or a tenacious Capricorn?

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is now offering custom license plates featuring the 12 zodiac signs, so you can show off your sign at all times on your car. Each plate includes the name, symbol and image of the sign, such as a bull for Taurus or a crab for Cancer, as well as images of the phases of the moon alongside the bottom edge of the plate.

“Custom plates are a way for New Yorkers to express their many interests,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder, a Sagittarius. “The DMV recognizes that every customer is unique, and we support that by having a variety of custom plate options to choose from.”

Zodiac license plates are available to order at https://dmv.ny.gov/plates/organizations. Plates can also be ordered by mail or by calling the Custom Plates office at (518) 402-4838.

More than 200 custom license plates are now available in New York state, including regional license plates or designs that represent branches of the military and veterans, various professions, causes, sports teams (including the Buffalo Bills) and more. Revenues from cause plates support charities, such as the World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship Fund, Cure Childhood Cancer Research Fund, the Environmental Protection Fund and the Life Pass It On Trust Fund.

Custom license plates are optional, and prices vary.

Most drivers have the yellow “Empire Gold” license plates introduced in 2010 or the current blue-and-white standard design, launched in 2020 with the word “Excelsior” and images of several New York landmarks including the Statue of Liberty. Keeping older plates or replacing them with Excelsior can cost $25 at the time of registration, while personalized (vanity) or custom designs are slightly more expensive.

The cost of each zodiac license plate is $60 for the initial purchase and $31.25 for annual renewal. A personalized zodiac license plate costs $91.25 initially with an annual renewal fee of $62.50. License plate renewal fees are included with vehicle registration renewal fees.

Take note: If you consider yourself to be the 13th zodiac sign, you’re out of luck in New York. The 13th sign, Ophiuchus, was added for those born after 2009 due to gradual changes in the Earth’s alignment, though Western astrology is based on equinoxes — so for most New Yorkers, their horoscope hasn’t changed.
