Who is Tyler Murray? Meet 34YO Red Sox Announcer Who Will Supersede Ed Cohen as New Knicks Voice

The New York Knicks have replaced their play-by-lay radio voice from Ed Cohen to Tyler Murray. Cohen has an impressive portfolio performing for different leagues and networks, including MSG Network, NHL Network, MLB.com, and ESPN Plus. However, the 41-year-old sportscaster just did it for a few games and now the 34-year-old will keep alive the thrill of the sport for the Knicks fans. Murray is himself a major Knicks fan who has a whole array of play-by-play announcement experience.

He has worked for both MLB and college sports. In the past, his work has been featured on platforms like In past NESN, WEEI, FOX Sports, NBC Sports Boston, ESPN+, Learfield, MLB.com, and iHeartMedia stations.

Knicks games on the radio will still be available on ESPN New York. However, reportedly, Murray will be detailing the nuances of the game on 880 AM rather than 98.7 FM. The Knicks announcer position is a spot for legends in the sports broadcasting world, including Mike Breen, Marty Glickman, and Marv Albert.

Reacting to his latest recruitment, Tyler Murray was elated about his new role, as he said in the press release, “As a lifelong Knicks fan, it’s always been my dream to call their games. The city, the Garden, the fans — there’s just nothing like Knicks basketball. It’s an absolute honor to join MSG Networks, and I’m excited to put in the work to continue their incredible standard of Knicks coverage on ESPN Radio.”

Ed Cohen has been handling the job since 2017. However, the veteran experienced some health issues last year related to his voice, which he has not overcome yet. Speedy recovery to Ed!

Tyler Murray: Early life and current active roles as a sports broadcaster

Tyler Murray was born in Connecticut in 1990. He spent his childhood in Massachusetts. At the moment, Tyler Murray is the lead play-by-play commentator for both the Hockey East Game of the Week on NESN and the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox. Moreover, The WEEI Red Sox Radio Network also brought him on to call more than twenty Major League Baseball games in 2024. For NESN in 2024, Tyler called the championship weekend on WEEI. In 2022 and 2023, he called the Hockey East Championship Game and Semifinals at TD Garden.

Tyler also hosts football and basketball for the University of Massachusetts on WEEI Springfield during the fall and winter, in addition to basketball for the University of New Hampshire on ESPN+. Tyler calls Toronto Blue Jays Spring Training games on the Sportsnet Radio Network, besides his work as a baseball broadcaster for the WooSox. He also serves as the lead voice of the New Balance Future Stars Series at Fenway Park, Citi Field, and other locations across the nation.

Career arc of new Knicks’ voice post-college graduation

After graduating from Boston University Summa Cum Laude with a Broadcast Journalism degree in 2011, Tyler joined the broadcast team of the Advanced-A Daytona Cubs and spent the season on the Jackie Robinson Ballpark clean-up crew to help pay his rent and pursue his goal of becoming the lead voice of a professional franchise.

​The following season, he accomplished his goal when he was hired to serve as both the media relations coordinator for MLB Spring Training and the play-by-play broadcaster for the Advanced-A Dunedin Blue Jays. During his initial season of two years in Dunedin, Tyler arranged the first-ever terrestrial radio collaboration in the team’s history and expanded the broadcast schedule to include all 142 games for the first time.

As the primary voice and Director of Broadcasting for the Advanced-A Daytona Tortugas, the newest team in Minor League Baseball, Tyler returned to Daytona Beach in 2015. He worked as the public address announcer for the Washington Nationals during Spring Training and on ESPN3 for Stetson University football and basketball as part of his new position.

Hailing from Massachusetts, he grabbed the media relations manager and lead voice of the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The hiring gave him the chance to come back to New England in 2016. Before assuming his current roles with Hockey East, the University of Massachusetts, and the University of New Hampshire, he quickly added several other play-by-play roles to his schedule, including Dartmouth College Football and Hockey, Boston University Women’s Hockey, and several sports at Harvard University.

Post the 2018 Fisher Cats championship season coverage, which was led by prospects Bo Bichette, Cavan Biggio, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Tyler received several invitations to call Blue Jays Spring Training.
