Will the Giants bench Daniel Jones? Two interceptions doom New York in loss to Panthers | Sporting News United Kingdom

The Giants officially have the worst record in the NFL after Sunday’s 20-17 overtime loss to the lowly Panthers.

New York struggled to mount much of anything against Carolina’s defense, with most of the team’s production stemming from Tyrone Tracy’s mystifying legs. Among their biggest underperformers was sixth-year starter Daniel Jones, who endured a woeful display beneath the Allianz Arena lights in Munich.

Jones gave the ball away twice and also failed to record a passing touchdown for the sixth time this season. His fourth-quarter giveaway proved especially costly, preventing Big Blue from recording a game-tying field goal as the clock dwindled down.

Jones has not been good through 10 games this season en route to a 2-8 record. Giants fans have noticed, with many calling for head coach Brian Daboll to make a swap under center.

Sunday’s showing added to that sentiment in a major way. With that, The Sporting News assesses the chances of Jones being relegated to sideline duty going forward.

Will the Giants bench Daniel Jones?

When Jones has been healthy, he has kept a firm grip on the starting role under center. The Giants are yet to give any indication that Jones could be replaced in the pecking order.

There are countless reasons why New York continues to put its faith in Jones. Daboll has been one of Jones’ staunchest supporters since his arrival, and it’s easy to see why: Jones and Daboll struck up quite the partnership in the Giants’ skipper’s first year in the Big Apple, leading Big Blue to the postseason. For his efforts, Jones was rewarded with a four-year, $160 million deal.

Things haven’t gone to plan since Jones’ impressive 2022 campaign. That contract has grown all the more glaring in recent seasons. A 2-8 record to start 2024 is not an aberration. Rather, it’s a reflection of New York’s comedy of errors, one which Jones has made his fair share of contributions to.

Jones’ penchant for turnovers resurfaced on Sunday; the sixth-year hurler saw two of his efforts fall into Carolina hands, one of which occurred with New York inside the red zone and only needing a field goal to tie the game up at 17.

Daboll still appears to have the faith of New York’s front office. Giants co-owner John Mara gave Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen the dreaded vote of confidence Wednesday, telling reporters that he didn’t plan on changing New York’s hierarchy any time soon.

“Obviously, we’re all very disappointed with where we are right now,” Mara said Wednesday night at the debut of an NFL Films piece about his father, Wellington. “But I’m going to say one thing: We are not making any changes this season and I do not anticipate making any changes in the offseason either.”

Daboll again voiced lukewarm support for Jones after Sunday’s loss, saying he did not consider a quarterback change Sunday even after Jones struggled in the first half.

That sort of security could lead Daboll to make some adjustments as he attempts to chart a path forward for his roster. New York does appear to be in the market for a new signal-caller — Jones’ performances simply don’t warrant him having a monopoly over the position. With Drew Lock waiting in the wings, Big Blue does have a capable backup.

Jones’ benching might not be imminent. But it certainly seems a possibility as losses continue to pile up in the City that Never Sleeps.
