Worst cities to drive in U.S.: Where does NYC rank?

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City has, once again, been named one of the worst for driving in the United States, according to a recent study.

The Big Apple was deemed one of the 10 worst cities to drive on the annual list of Best and Worst Cities to Drive In produced by WalletHub, a personal finance website.

With first place representing the best city to drive in and 100th representing the worst, New York ranked 94th overall, making it the seventh worst city to drive in the country.

The ranking is a downgrade over last year, when New York City came in at 93rd.

Researchers looked at 30 indicators of a good commute across the country’s 100 most-populated cities and came up with a ranking of driving conditions in each.

Key indicators included road quality, time spent in congestion, gas prices and car thefts, among others.

While not a surprise, but still a concern, New York City ranked dead last, 100th out of 100, in the “Traffic and Infrastructure” category, which includes road quality, hours spent in congestion and average commute time.

The city also ranked near the bottom in “Cost of Ownership & Maintenance,” ranking 90th for the cost of buying and owning a car— gas prices, average insurance premiums, average parking rates and the like.

The Big Apple did, however, perform reasonably well in the safety category, ranking 20th overall. This category included traffic fatality rate, accident likelihood, rate of car thefts and more.

According to the study, the best five cities to drive in are: Raleigh, North Carolina (1); Boise, Idaho (2); Corpus Christi, Texas (3); Greensboro, North Carolina (4); Jacksonville, Florida (5).
