Yankees World Series roster: Full 26-man list for New York in 2024 championship series vs. Dodgers | Sporting News Canada

The 12th World Series meeting between the Yankees and Dodgers might be the most star-studded edition yet.

Featuring the third-most expensive payroll in MLB, New York’s active roster is teeming with talent, including outfielders Aaron Judge and Juan Soto as well as pitcher Gerrit Cole.

Soto, who was acquired before the 2024 season in a massive seven-player trade with the Padres, is credited with sending to the Yankees through to the World Series after blasting a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the 10th against the Guardians in ALCS Game 5. New York won the series, 4-1, that night, securing the franchise’s 41st Fall Classic appearance in search of its 27th title.

The Yankees have blasted a whopping 13 home runs in the 2024 postseason so far, five of which belong to designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton. Now, they will face their toughest opponent yet for all the marbles, taking on Sporting News MLB Player of the Year Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers in Los Angeles for Game 1.

Here’s everything to know about the Yankees World Series roster, including the full 26-man list for New York in the 2024 championship series vs. Dodgers.

Yankees starting pitchers

Rank Pitcher
1 Gerrit Cole
2 Carlos Rodón

New York’s main advantage over its opponent is its pitching staff, considering the litany of injuries sustained by the Dodgers rotation this season. Last year’s AL Cy Young winner, Cole will make his third career World Series start and first for New York.

Cole is one of four pitchers with 20 or more postseason starts to maintain a sub 3.00 ERA, according to Baseball Reference. In his 17 starts this year, the ace went 8-5 with a 3.41 ERA, and Friday will mark his first appearance against the Dodgers since June 2023. In that game, Cole pitched six innings and allowed just one run on four hits, striking out five.

Next in the rotation is Carlos Rodón, who is lights out when he’s in his groove. Los Angeles’ current roster has a combined .190 ERA against the lefty, who has given up 16 hits and 11 runs in 84 at-bats against Dodgers hitters throughout his decade-long career.

The one question remaining for New York is who will fill in the third and fourth spots in the starting rotation before the Yankees turn to their bullpen. Both Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil are in the running for Game 3 and 4, but a potential return of Nestor Cortes, who maintained a 3.77 ERA through 174.1 innings in the regular season, is imminent.

The lefty was diagnosed with a flexor strain—usually a precursor to a serious elbow injury—a month ago, but Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday there was a “good chance” Cortes would be on the team’s World Series roster. While it’s still to be determined if he will start for the first time since the regular season, getting him back will certainly bolster New York’s chances against a high-firing Dodgers order.
